Employment law Breakfast Series

The Kentuckiana chapter has found an excellent way to help their students attend the SHRM Annual Conference. It's called the Employment Law Breakfast Series. The chapter finds local HR experts and attorneys to be speakers for no charge. This is a good opportunity for lawyers and consultants to get exposure to potential clients. The program is held one Friday morning each month during the school year on various HR law topics. Registration, continental breakfast and networking is 7:15-7:45 a.m. and the speaker presents from 7:45-9:00 a.m. The local SHRM professional chapter provides their mailing list and the students send out brochures to all HR people in the area. They also ask for free announcements to be printed in the local paper, local SHRM chapter newsletter, and local Chamber of Commerce newsletter.

The program is a win-win for both students and professionals because it allows the students to network with HR professionals, to learn about HR, and gain experience in running programs. The HR practitioners in turn get to see the campus, network, gain important legal information and also earn recertification credits for their PHR/SPHR. The event is a very successful fundraiser, which also provides a service to the HR community. Students may attend the program for free, and professionals pay $15 per program or $100 for all eight sessions. At the end of the program, a name is drawn and that person wins a book on the topic presented. The program has continued for the past four years and has produced enough revenue to send chapter members to the annual conference all expenses paid. Students who are most active in the chapter receive the financial support.
