Rolling Memberships

  • 1.  Rolling Memberships

    Good morning, all

We're a smaller chapter (20'ish members) with an annual membership that runs from January 1 - December 31. We do a membership campaign a few times a year, with a big push in August that includes a promotion for an 18-month membership.

We're exploring the idea of moving from a yearly membership with a defined expiration, to a rolling membership that expires one year from when someone registers. We think this will add value to a membership, offer other promotional opportunities, and keep us thinking about membership more often as we'll be following up with people as their memberships expire throughout the year.

Is anyone using a rolling membership model? Anything we should consider in doing so? Would love to hear feedback.

    Thank you!

The Central Illinois Chapter (around 100 members) is thinking along the same lines of you.  Traditionally, everyone has renewed in January.  Even if someone joins mid-year, their membership is only for the calendar year.  We have different rates for which point of the year they join.  However, we are currently in the process of amending our bylaws to make it a rolling membership renewal date – so that it will renew 1 year after you join.  This will allow for monthly follow-up with renewing members instead of a big annual push (sometimes for the brand new membership director just coming on board), as well as allowing us to keep one membership rate for the entire year instead of it changing part-way through the year.  This also aligns with how ones annual SHRM membership works – renews on an anniversary basis rather than an everyone-at-once basis.

    Thanks!

I am interested in hearing if others are doing this, how they would switch.

Might be something to consider, especially if people start signing up via SHRM for dual membership.

Does this change serve the chapters long term goals?  Are you a 100% chapter or thinking about being one? Will you want to participate in the dual membership SHRM is launching?  This last question I think is the catalyst for decision making, I would check with your Field Services Director, they can probably give you some great information and guidance on this.

It definitely aligns with our long term goal of increasing and engaging members, as it'll increase engagement frequency. You shared some great points we should be considering, thanks for the insight!

    Hi Ashley,

Chicago SHRM has rolling membership and it works great. This system allows for continual membership recruitment and engagement and allows the chapter to always promote the benefits of being a member for education and the community of shared interactions.
