I am incredibly grateful for the leadership and resilience of our SHRM Volunteer Leaders over this past year.

2020 was a year we will never forget. Just two months in, COVID-19 disrupted every aspect of daily life overnight. From conference organizing and business travel to summer vacations and graduations, plans were wrecked, and workloads doubled.

As we navigated our way through a global pandemic, crushing unemployment numbers and a large segment of the workforce going remote-punctuated by a summer of racial unrest-the world of work made a key discovery:

HR matters now more than ever.

Our profession pivoted quickly to respond to the challenge of 2020.

SHRM Volunteer Leaders have led the charge, as HR leaders have reimagined workplaces and functions, engaged in difficult conversations about injustice, crafted strategies for safe workplaces, and supported employee mental health. As never before, HR leaders earned the trust and gratitude of our colleagues and organizations.

The SHRM culture we have been cultivating so carefully has enabled us to reach out to steady each other and stretch to look around the next corner. And through the chaos of this past year, SHRM and our SHRM Volunteer Leaders have continued to lift each other up.

From Together Forward @Work to record-breaking certification numbers, we have helped you build better workplaces that will be instrumental in recovering businesses and inventing the future of work.

I am pleased that you are among the first to receive the SHRM 2020 Annual Report, which details our remarkable journey and sets the stage for a successful 2021. Please review this report and share this message with your State Councils, Chapters, and your broader network of HR professionals.

On behalf of SHRM and HR professionals everywhere, thank you for all you do.
