As employer benefits for same-sex spouses receive equal treatment under the federal tax code and ERISA, is there still a need for domestic partner benefits for unmarried couples? SHRM Online looks at the trends, and the arguments.

Much of the focus on same-sex benefits has fallen on tax issues related to health care. But employers also will need to change many aspects of their retirement plans, making available to same-sex spouses any retirement benefits that are provided to opposite-sex spouses.
