New Marriage Equality Laws and Employer Provided Benefits
On December 6, c
ounty clerks began issuing marriage licenses in Maryland to same-sex couples. Marriages in Maryland can begin January 1.
I haven't yet seen any guidance to HR professionals on how these changes should be reflected in our benefit practices. (I contacted SHRM last week and I'm hoping someone is working on some practical guidance for members.) In the meantime, I started looking to states that have had marriage equality laws in place for guidance. Information from NY was particularly helpful.
Here are
some of the questions I am asking and what I think the answers might be.
It will be interesting to follow the Supreme Courts ruling on the two cases they're currently considering.
